Rustem Pasa Mosque was designed and built by the famous Imperial architect Sinan, for the Grand Vizier Rustem Pasa. He was married married to one of the daughters of Suleiman the Magnificant. The construction work was completed in 1563.
Rustem Pasa Mosque is decorated with ceramic tiles, and these tiles are one of the most beautiful examples of the Ottoman art.
The dome is placed over four elephant leg columns. The area where the mosque was going to be built, was pit, so Sinan built vaulted shops and the mosque was placed over a high terrace over those shops. The shops also supported the mosque financially. |
